Details

In Vitruvius and ancient Roman philosophy, Humanitas means the "soul" that elevates human beings from mere biological existence to cultured, empathetic, and ethical beings. This work treats the human as a unit of emotion, representing humanity's most vulnerable and most powerful state: naked existence. This work, termed human-centered design, focuses on how a structure affects the emotional state of the human living within it. Here, stone is not merely a mass; it is the petrified embodiment of humanity's need for one another.

The sculpture's lack of distinctive details such as hands, face, or fingers removes it from being a specific individual and transforms it into the "essence of humanity" (humanitas). The absence of details eliminates distinctions like race, gender, or status. This is Humanitas in its purest form. A universal human form that encompasses everyone, the sculpture reminds us not of who we are, but of what we are.
