Vitruvius III. / Grace

According to Vitruvius, a building must not only be solid (firmitas) and useful (utilitas); it must also appeal to the viewer's soul and give them pleasure. For Vitruvius, Venustas is not merely superficial ornamentation; it is the spiritual satisfaction created by the mathematical arrangement of parts. The human-form figure carved from marble contains its own unique details. The veins and gleams resulting from the natural structure of the material make the artwork unique.
