The white face mask on the ground stands before the figure, representing the "persona" or social mask that an individual wears in society.
The moment of katarsis is when the mask falls. The figure has shed the heavy burden or false identity from their face; there is nothing left to hide. This symbolizes a return to the soul's nakedness and honesty.
